DESCRIPTION:I would like to share a research about the communication strug
gles of one of the Colombian guerrillas\, FARC-EP\, with the Colombian arm
 y. I documented how radio-based communication became a crucial\, but ambig
uous infrastructure of war at FARC units. The sudden introduction of local
ization technologies by the Colombian army in 2000 presented a lethal thre
at to the guerrilla group. The data I collected during interviews in Colom
bia reports a severe learning process to diminish this new risk\, relying
on a combination of informed beliefs and significant technical understandi
ng. This became an academic paper\, that I am happy to share with Mesh com
munity\, especially because the Peace Agreement is on fragile ground amid
a deepening humanitarian crisis.\nSpeaker: Debora Leal (Co-Nectar\, Brazil

DESCRIPTION:This talk is dedicated to present our current approach to indi
genous\ngroups\, which are mobilized in resisting to the invasion of their
\nterritories in the Amazon. Strategically\, we decided to begin this\npro
ject with indigenous groups of west Amazon\, Acre\, Brazil: the\nAshaninka
and the Huni Kui people. Our aim is to collaborate to building\na communi
cation belt to monitor and communicate between these two\nterritories\, wh
ich are located on the border of Brazil and Peru. We\npropose to create an
app that would make every device in the network a\nnode in a mesh of data
by using cryptographic keys to sign every\nmessage. As part of tech devel
 opment\, a combination of solar and water\nenergy will also be studied\, i
mplemented and documented to further\npublication: in many of our target c
ommunities there's no electricity\nAvailable. Combining different technolo
 gical solutions\, we understand\nthat voice\, photo and video can have a b
etter circulation inside\nindigenous territories using mesh networks\, rad
io stations and\,\neventually\, be uploaded to the Internet to make it int
ernationally\nvisible. We're a group of anthropologists and tech developer

DESCRIPTION:Cryptography gives us the ability to have law without police.\
nFor example when I send you an encrypted message\, we don't need law enfo
rcement to prevent the letter carrier from looking in it.\n\nBlockchains e
xtend that power by giving us the ability to have business interactions wi
thout accountants.\nFor example when you have bitcoin in your wallet\, you
don't need an auditor to check that it's really there.\n\nBut for somethi
ng so secure\, you may wonder why blockchain has been the domain of so man
y scams.\nI claim this is not a flaw in the technology but rather the faul
t of malfeasants who misrepresented what was actually being promised\, and
as the technology matures\, I think blockchain will become far less corru
pt than more traditional forms of business.\n\n7 years ago I set out to cr
eate a turn-key solution for anyone who wanted to build a mesh network\, a
nd by the numbers I have failed.\nI created an interesting piece of softwa
re which makes secure networks with minimal setup\, and there are about 10
00 nodes in the public network\, but its deployment in actual wireless mes
hes has been slim to none.\n\nPeople building real world meshes need techn
ology that works perfectly\, or has the flexibility to let them go in and
manually fix it when it doesn't. Right now we have the latter but the form
er is still a dream.\nBut the dream of solving mesh network problems once
is still not dead.\n\nI will present a project which I am now working on t
o make an open blockchain called Mantle.\nMantle fundamentally consists of
  3 things: A means to tokenize and trade bandwidth\, a bandwidth-hard proo
f of work to create demand that will drive investment in network infrastru
cture\, and an elected network steward which will receive 20% of newly min
ed Mantle for the purpose of investing in the network.\n\nOpen protocols\,
network neutrality and free speech have taken us so far in so little time
. But today it seems more and more that every political group considers so
mething or other to be censorship-worthy.\nThe internet is a great gift wh
ich the previous generation gave to us\, the least we can do is to encrypt
and decentralize it.\nSpeaker: Caleb James DeLisle / cjd (cjdns)

DESCRIPTION:This panel will focus on a central question: how to build and
maintain networks that are open and accessible to everybody\, in terms of
geographical reach\, cost and diversity of ISPs?\n\nTwo axes will be discu
ssed: public network infrastructure and community networks\, with a partic
ular focus on France. The following questions will be addressed:\n\n- how
does the French model of public FTTH networks (« Plan France Très Haut
Débit ») work? In theory\, in practice?\n\n- how important is it to ada
pt to each local territory\, to work with local actors?\n\n- are there oth
er models that allow to build country-wide networks that are open and acce
ssible?\n\n- can public networks and local community network be complement
ary? Can they work together?\nSpeakers:\n- Julien Delmouly (Infranum)\n- A
drien Nader (Fédération FDN)\n- Panos (netCommons)

DESCRIPTION:qaul.net is a zero config\, multi platform\, secure\, anonymou
s Internet independent wifi communication application. It directly interco
nnects end user devices and allows communication between them. It synchron
izes and forwards messages and allows communicating via voice chat\, text
messages and file sharing.\n\nIn 2013\, qaul.net antennas on the roof of 6
b interconnected the neighborhood with an informal settlement on the other
side of the canal.\n\nqaul.net is undergoing a complete rewrite. A new ne
twork agnostic routing protocol is being created to form Internet independ

talk will present and discuss the concepts of qaul.net\, with a new approa

cus on mobile phones as crucial network nodes.\nSpeaker: Mathias Jud (qaul

learned the ways in which our laws and cultural attitudes favor hierarchic
