~~> Full schedule of the event <~~
~~> Live stream <~~
The event aims to bring together people from across the globe who are interested in community networks, including wireless mesh network technologies, fiber infrastructure, Do-It-Yourself Internet Access Providers, and more generally how to create and maintain a thriving community of people involved in building their own networks.
We envision 7 days full of expert presentations, practical workshops, late-night hacking sessions, and fruitful discussions: whether you are a mesh networking enthusiast, community networking activist, protocol developer, or have an interest in networking in general, come and join us!
This year, we would like to expand the topics beyond wireless, with a dual focus on fiber and community. But you will probably also meet developers from the most popular open source mesh protocol implementations: Babel, B.A.T.M.A.N. L3 and L2, BMX6, IEEE 802.11s, OLSR.
Contents
Important dates
The event takes place from 2019-07-08 to 2019-07-14.
Deadline for accommodation packages: first-come first-serve
Deadline for event proposal: May 10th Extended to June 7th
Where
Location of the main event
Le 6B, 6-10 quai de Seine, 93200 Saint-Denis, France (very close to Paris).
It is near the Saint-Denis train station, north of Paris.
Warning: the building is not accessible to disabled people: there is no elevator!
How to come by plane
The closest airports are Paris Charles de Gaulle and Paris Orly, both 45 minutes away by public transportation. Another option is the Paris Beauvais airport, located 2h15 away from the event by public transportation.
How to reach the train station
Head for the Saint-Denis train station:
either using Train H from Gare du Nord (faster option)
either using RER D from Gare du Nord, Chatelet, or Gare de Lyon. The RER is headed north towards Creil.
Make sure to buy a ticket towards "Saint-Denis" or for zone 3 in any subway station, and use this ticket from the start of your journey (it will work in all subway lines within Paris). Tickets cost the following:
one-way ticket to/from Saint-Denis: 2.80 €
"carnet" of 10 one-way tickets to/from Saint-Denis: 22.40 €
5-day unlimited pass including Paris and Saint-Denis: 38.35 €
If you only plan to go to the 6b and back to Paris, the cheapest option is a "carnet" of 10 tickets (4.48 € per day). If you also plan on moving within Paris during the week, the 5-day unlimited pass is more interesting.
Make sure to keep your ticket at hand, since it can be required for ticket control as well as to open doors at your the exit station.
How to go from the train station to the 6b
The 6b is at a 5-10 minutes walk from the Saint-Denis station, here is the direction:
What
In brief: we will have organized talks, workshops and discussion panels on community networks and wireless mesh networks (see Call for Participation). There will also be more informal activities: cooperative hacking, self-organized projects, and (we hope) delightful conversations!
Full schedule: #Talk_Schedule_and_Workshops
In addition, there may be a self-organized wireless mesh network, running different routing protocols to compare them. Please coordinate directly on the battlemesh mailing list to make that happen.
How to register
The event itself is free of charge and open for all! However, it makes the organisation much easier if you tell us in advance that you plan to come.
To register, please send an email to v12 at battlemesh.org with the following content:
Subject: Registration Name and/or Nick Date of arrival / departure Accommodation package: [Yes/No; package 1 or 2; room preference (mixed, non-mixed, specific person)] T-Shirt Size: [S/M/L/none, man/woman/unisex] Other details you want to share: (e.g. community, country, URLs, twitter/mastodon handle, dietary restrictions, ...) Do you agree to appear on the public list of participants? [Yes/No] Are you applying for a travel scholarship? [Yes/No; city; estimated price]
We will then put your name on the public list of participants: https://battlemesh.org/BattleMeshV12/Participants
If you apply for an accommodation package or travel scolarship, we will reply to you shortly with more information.
Accommodation package
For those of you who are looking for a convenient and low cost accommodation option: we negotiated a special group reservation for 24 people. The Hostel is called "Beautiful Belleville" and is located 30 minutes away from the event venue by train.
Check-in time: starting from 3 pm (the reception is open 24/7)
Check-out time: 11 am
When checking in, you may have to pay the tourist tax (a few euros).
How to reach the hostel
The address of the hostel is the following:
Beautiful Belleville 12 rue de l’atlas 75019 PARIS
The nearest subway station is Belleville, on line 2 (preferred) or line 11. Be aware that line 11 does not currently stop at Chatelet because of maintenance works!
If you come from an airport (Orly or Roissy-Charles de Gaulle), you should change at Gare du Nord / La Chapelle.
Then, the hostel is a 5-minute walk from the Belleville station:

Registering
Two types of all-in accommodation packages are available. They both include 6 nights (from the 8th to the 14th of July), breakfast, bedsheets and towels. Do note that the night from 7th July to 8th July is not included! Please plan your travel accordingly.
Package 1 in 4-beds rooms: 201 euros
Package 2 in 2-beds rooms: 213 euros
The packages are attributed on a first-come first-serve basis, so register as soon as possible!
How to register for accommodation: contact us by email (v12 at battlemesh dot org) with the package you want, and preference (mixed / non-mixed / same room as another person). We will confirm to you whether there are rooms left, and then send you an invoice with payment instructions.
Travel Scholarships
Thanks to our sponsors, we have the opportunity to provide some Travel Scholarships to cover the costs of a long distance flight to Paris and back. If you want to apply, please explicitly tell us so in the registration email. Please also provide the location from which you will be coming from, an estimation of the travel costs (flight to Paris and back), and whether you absolutely need us to cover the full amount of your ticket to be able to participate.
You need to prepare a short video (2 to 5 minutes) in which you briefly present yourself, your community and your interests, especially related to the Battlemesh event. It should be in either English or French, but if you are not fluent enough you can speak in your native language and add English subtitles. If you have no easy mean to share large files, tell us in your email and we will provide a link to upload your video.
Deadline was May 10th
Call for participation
We invite participants to propose workshops, talks or panel discussions relating to network infrastructure in general, how it can be built and operated as a common, and how to sustain a community around networking.
We welcome contributions that broadly address these questions from any of several perspectives: technical, organisational, economical, regulatory, juridical, political. Example topics:
- Wireless Community Networks
- Community Networks that deploy Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) networks
- TV white space as a precious network resource (radio spectrum)
- Free hardware and free software for Community Networks
- How to organize a durable community structure?
- How to involve non-technical people? To "digital stewardship" and beyond?
- How to disseminate the spirit of community networks, knowledge etc?
- Connecting rural areas: challenges and solutions
- Public fiber networks: architecture, funding, private actors involved, oversight
- Internet of Things (IoT) networks and their impact on society
- How to take advantage of a community network in ways otherwise not possible? What are the applications?
- Local Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) as a common infrastructure
- DNS as a common infrastructure?
Deadline: 10 May 2019 Extended to June 7th
To submit a proposal, send us an email (v12 at battlemesh.org) with the template below. All information you give us will be made publicly available in the schedule, unless explicitely specified otherwise.
