B.A.T.M.A.N. (better approach to mobile ad-hoc networking) is a routing protocol for multi-hop ad-hoc mesh networks. Most of the development now focuses on the open source implementation B.A.T.M.A.N. advanced (often referenced as batman-adv), an implementation of the B.A.T.M.A.N. routing protocol in form of a linux kernel module operating on layer 2.

OLSR.org is one of the oldest and still - of course - the best mesh routing protocol for community wireless networks
On a more serious note: OLSR.org was the choice of protocols for most community wireless networks which started in the years 2002. Since then it has matured from a diploma thesis to a rock solid, highly portable link state mesh routing protocol. There are different variants of OLSR, some used by the military (NRL-OLSR and descendants) , some by academia (OLSR.org) and community wireless networks and of course - the commotion project. In the last years, the focus was on redesigning a lot of the internals, working on the OLSR v2 new protocol variant, and bug squashing for the stable version (OLSR v1 protocol). In every routing protocol, features are nice, but stability wins.
Ninux.org is an italian community network that aims to create a decentralized, community-led, wireless network in the Italian peninsula.
More and more cities are joining the network and this year we have many news to present at the event!
Ninux.org will support the event by:
- promoting the event
- bring some active members of the community to the event
- give a couple of talks about the status of our network
- lend hardware for the routing protocol testing
- we already donated a small sum of money to help with the logistics
AlterMundi is an organization that fosters the rising of a new paradigm founded on freedom gained through peer collaboration. We explore different manifestations of these peer-to-peer alternatives and in particular we do a great deal of work in relation to Wireless Community Networks.
We have developed a WCN model that we call MiniMaxi. It is based on very low-cost, multi-radio mesh nodes running AlterMesh firmware, which automatically configures the mesh network. The firmware can be customised using a web tool we call the Chef. We also provide tunnel broker service for community networks that don't have native IPv6 connection.
Several network projects in South America have already adopted the tools we have developed. We are eager to share our experience and to learn a lot from all of you!
The CONFINE project is a research project FIRE on Community Networks. It is developing the Community-Lab experimental testbed and is doing research and experimentation in different aspects, including routing protocols such as OLSR or BMX6 and different aspects such as secure communication, privacy, video streaming or wifi enhancements.

guifi.net is a Community Network where WiFi and optical fibre links coexist.
The Stichting Wireless Leiden is an open, cheap, fast wireless network is established for the city of Leiden and the surrounding villages. It is a local network that technically seamlessly on the Internet, but also can be used for free local communication in the Leiden region. Wireless Leiden is a non-profit organization, which runs entirely on volunteers and professionals committed to achieving and maintaining the wireless infrastructure.
The project objectives constitute involvement of the local community to share community resources in the community and for the community to provide wireless access to the Internet and new information technologies to local and disadvantaged; freely, voluntary, independent, non-commercial using specific wireless access methods where the creation of each new access point made by participants and volunteers extends and expands the coverage of wireless network to another location serving thereby providing wireless access to new technologies and empowering the local citizen.
We intend to involve the local community to be imperative for greater guarantee of success, sustainability and expansion project. Community involvement in the project can be a challenge, but if it is not involved, the technology does not meet your needs hindering its implementation and expansion. Regardless of the complexity of these tasks, so that this project achieves further success also needs the support of those who will serve and aspire for support, donations and sponsorships reputable sites, whose motives are easily accepted by the community. We also want to find the person or people who will probably be interested in the project or in development, support and participation as we may need to engage in certain functions, such as participation, organization or administration or if they wish to accept. This project is preferred but not exclusive to possible suitors that have the confidence of the community, know who can and should be contacted speaking the language of the community. We aim in seeking a specific selection of the right people for the project. No other decision will affect the project more than having local people on effective and reliable team who are key persons in institutions or community.
We do not create false enthusiasm or guarantees that can not be implemented in collaboration with potential stakeholders, participants, supporters and sponsors, or we will be open and honest and try to inform and educate the underprivileged and the less informed from the most diverse content such as audio visual content. In places where people or with the level of information is lower, we will focus on the services of internet to radio stations, television, print articles and photos without trying to introduce technology to someone without realizing what applications they can actually serve that person, persons, area or community and informing the best possible prospects because not always have an idea how new technologies can be favourable to them.

What is it:
It is firmware for embedded network devices based on OpenWRT Linux operating system,
it provides an easy way to set up networks using MESH it doesn't matter your they are either wired or WiFi or a mix of both
- It is a fast and reliable way to extend an Internet uplink to end-users
Two main purposes:
For quick deployments
There's no need to think about network topology, all you need to do is to spread the nodes and connect one to internet.
Use it in any kind of environments like concerts, meetings, demonstrations or in case of a natural disaster.
For the wireless communities
If you are new into this all you need to become part of the existing community or to start building one is to download and install the firmware. It won't take you more than the time you need to take a coffee to have your node ready to be put in place.
But if you are already an old hands at wireless communities here is qMp to let you forget about all those weird network administration tricks that don't last more than a day in your mind and focus on what makes your community grow, that is, the nodes deployment.
How is it done:
- Providing a complete autoconfiguration system from the first boot
- Using a set of Layer 3 MESH protocols: BMX6 (main), OLSR6 and Babel as backup
- Using IPv6 as the main IP protocol
- Using IPv4 only for end-user connection (tunneling)
- Providing an easy and intuitive administration web interface (LuCI based)

Open80211s is an open-source implementation of the recently ratified IEEE 802.11s wireless mesh standard. The goal is that the software runs any commodity hardware supported by the Linux kernel.
WE WILL SUPPORT THE WMBV6 BY:

The project Wireless Weimar ... in english ... Also known as the weimarnetz , aims at a free, independent and non-commercial radio network computer to establish in Weimar. It provides a platform for people , who are interested in an open network infrastructure, to exchange experiences and ideas, and the creation and the development of the joint network to coordinate . We see ourselves as the local implementation freifunk.net initiative.
The weimarnetz project will support the event by:
- help to promote the event
- numerous members of the freifunk community have already confirmed their attendance
- give talks about advancement of our community in certain aspects
- help setting up testbed for protocol testing
- Of course, we are available for discussions, ideas, and live tests!
wlan slovenija, open wireless network of Slovenia, is a country-wide initiative to cover whole Slovenia with free and open wireless access by encouraging everybody to share part of their existing Internet connectivity. Freifunk.net (German for: "Free radio") is a non-commercial open Grassroots initiative to support free radio networks in the German region. Freifunk.net is part of the international movement for open wireless radio networks.
Also the local Freifunk Leipzig Group explicitly endorsed the Battlemesh.
Commons For Europe
Cities face similar problems in terms of diminishing resources, increasing demands of citizens and a need for transformation towards Smart Cities. Commons4EU will allow the collaboration among cities, civic innovators, volunteers and SMEs, pushing towards the transformation of the cities from solution providers to ecosystem managers and to government 2.0 Commons4EU, is following the lead of Code for America in the application layer, starting the Code for Europe initiative, but at the same time it takes this one step further in the infrastructure field via the use of the Bottom-up Broadband Initiative. It advocates for an approach aimed at promoting openness, multidisciplinarity and recombination while focusing in the key aspect of connecting citizens with their constituencies either in terms of participation or reducing administrative burden by using Information Technologies.

The Open Technology Institute formulates policy and regulatory reforms to support open architectures and opensource innovations and facilitates the development and implementation of open technologies and communications networks. OTI promotes affordable, universal, and ubiquitous communications networks through partnerships with communities, researchers, industry, and public interest groups and is committed to maximizing the potentials of innovative open technologies by studying their social and economic impacts – particularly for poor, rural, and other underserved constituencies. OTI provides in-depth, objective research, analysis, and findings for policy decision-makers and the general public.
Cineca is a non profit Consortium, made up of 56 Italian universities and 3 Institutions.
Cineca is an active participant in the OpenWISP community, OpenWISP is an open source software suite that allows to quickly setup and deploy an hotspot based free wifi service. OpenWISP is entirely based on Open Source solutions like OpenWRT, OLSR, Linux and last but not least Ruby on Rails. Today this system is being used successfully by more than 20 public administrations in Italy.
Cineca is also involved in an European Project known as "Commons For Europe" (aka Commons4EU or Commons 4 Europe) in which there are two pilots which are related to the wireless and community networking world known as "Bottom up Broadband" and "Free Europe Wifi".
