The event aims to bring together people from across the globe who are interested in community networks, including wireless mesh network technologies, fiber infrastructure, Do-It-Yourself Internet Access Providers, and more generally how to create and maintain a thriving community of people involved in building their own networks.

We envision 7 days full of expert presentations, practical workshops, late-night hacking sessions, and fruitful discussions: whether you are a mesh networking enthusiast, community networking activist, protocol developer, or have an interest in networking in general, come and join us!

This year, we would like to expand the topics beyond wireless, with a dual focus on fiber and community. But you will probably also meet developers from the most popular open source mesh protocol implementations: Babel, B.A.T.M.A.N. L3 and L2, BMX6, IEEE 802.11s, OLSR.

When

The event takes place from 2019-07-08 to 2019-07-14.

Where

Le 6B, 6-10 quai de Seine, 93200 Saint-Denis, France (very close to Paris).

OpenstreetMap Website

The location is at a 5-10 minutes walk from the Saint-Denis railway station on the RER D line or Train , easily accessible from the center of Paris. Make sure to buy a ticket for zone 3.

The closest airports are Paris Charles de Gaulle and Paris Orly, both 45 minutes away by public transportation. Another option is the Paris Beauvais airport, located 2h15 away from the event by public transportation.

What

In brief: we will have organized talks, workshops and discussion panels on community networks and wireless mesh networks (see Call for Participation). There will also be more informal activities: cooperative hacking, self-organized projects, and (we hope) delightful conversations!

In addition, there may be a self-organized wireless mesh network, running different routing protocols to compare them. Please coordinate directly on the battlemesh mailing list to make that happen.

How to register

The event itself is free of charge and open for all! However, it makes the organisation much easier if you tell us in advance that you plan to come.

To register, please send an email to v12 at battlemesh.org with the following content:

Subject: Registration

Name and/or Nick
Date of arrival / departure
Accommodation package: [Yes/No]
T-Shirt Size: [S/M/L/none, man/woman/any]
Other details you want to share: (e.g. community, country, URLs, twitter/mastodon handle, dietary restrictions, ...)
Do you agree to appear on the public list of participants?
Are you applying for a travel scholarship?

We will then put your name on the public list of participants: https://battlemesh.org/BattleMeshV12/Participants

Accommodation package

For those of you who are looking for a convenient and low cost accommodation option: we are negotiating a special group reservation. Please check here for news or sign-up for the mailing list for further details. The package is expected to include 6 nights in 2-beds or 4-beds rooms for a price range around 200€.

Call for participation

Introducing Battlemesh 2019 "Network Infrastructure as a Common"

This year's Battlemesh will be held in Paris. Besides the traditional "battle of the mesh" testbed, we invite participants to submit talks and workshops relating to network infrastructure in general, how it can be built and operated as a common, and how to sustain a community around networking.

Community networks around the world are transitioning towards fiber-based networks, either to directly connect end-users through Fiber-to-the-Home networks, or as a backbone for large wireless networks. Given the large investment cost and high longevity of fiber networks, several fundamental questions arise: who pays for the physical infrastructure? Who owns the network? What are the conditions for accessing it? How can we make sure that the network serves the common interest, by remaining accessible and affordable, ensuring no mass surveillance is possible, and providing universal coverage? These questions can also apply, to some degree, to wireless networks.

We welcome contributions that broadly address these questions from any of several perspectives: technical, organisational, economical, regulatory, juridical.

More precisely, this Call for Participation encompasses the following topics:

  • Wireless Community Networks
  • Community Networks that deploy Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) networks
  • TV white space as a precious network resource (radio spectrum)
  • Free hardware and free software for Community Networks
  • How to organize a durable community structure?
  • How to involve non-technical people? To "digital stewardship" and beyond?
  • How to disseminate the spirit of community networks, knowledge etc?
  • Connecting rural areas: challenges and solutions
  • Public fiber networks: architecture, funding, private actors involved, oversight
  • Internet of Things (IoT) networks and their impact on society
  • Local Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) as a way to relocalize interconnections
  • How to take advantage of this common infrastructure in ways otherwise not possible? What are the applications?
  • DNS as a common infrastructure?

Travel Scholarships

TODO / NOT DECIDED YET:

Thanks to our sponsors we will be able to offer a few travel scholarships (flight tickets) for non-EU residents.

If you want to apply for a travel scholarship (compensating the costs of a long distance flight to Paris and back) please explicitly tell us so in the registration mail. We will then ask you to prepare a short video message in which you are giving a brief introduction to yourself and your interests:

  • Where are you from?
  • Why would you like to attend Battlemesh?
  • What impact in your local environment do you expect from your participation?
  • Would you be able to attend without the travel scholarship?

Send a link to your video to the organizers' mailing list, v12 at battlemesh dot org

Application Deadline: The scholarship application window closes on TODO, so that we can confirm successful applications well ahead of the travel. Make sure to contact the organizers in time!
